Call for Papers: Soapbox6.0 – On the Uses of Absence

/in Forum /by Chantal

We are invitingextended proposalsbyJune 10th, 2024
Can we speak of aturnto absence? Across the contemporary academic conjuncture, theory is reapproaching the absent in all its varying fleshly and rhetorical forms, revalorizing ‘absence’ itself as a critical matter. Enduring scholarly investments in re-presenting and re-presencing the absented body (from the archive and media, from power and institutions, from theory and writing) have become supplemented in current critical work by an affirmative interest instaying withabsence as such.

Vacancy PhD Candidate: Affectivity in the Anthropocene (Radboud University)

/in Forum /by Chantal

Application deadline: 15 April 2024
This project is funded by the Christine Mohrmann Foundation at Radboud University to support research initiated by Professor Dr Marjolein Oele, Professor of Philosophy of the Humanities. It is organised around the concept of affectivity (Greek: pathos), which has been crucial to theorising ancient Greek notions of undergoing, suffering, emotion, illness, and qualitative change. In the 20th and 21st centuries, notions of affect and affectivity are at the forefront of research in continental philosophy (e.g. Heidegger, Henry, Irigaray) and affect theory more broadly (e.g. Ahmed, Berlant). The prominence of these concepts is such that scholars even speak of an “affective turn” in the humanities (e.g. Clough and Halley).

CfP: Conference What Remains? Literature and Ethics in a Time of Crisis

/in Forum /by Chantal

Stockholm, 20-22 August 2024 | deadline for applications: 16 February 2024
This conference aims to bring these different strands of twenty-first-century reflection on
literature and ethics together to update the debate on the ethics of literature for the present —
for what can by now uncontroversially be termed “a time of crisis.” In light of environmental,
epidemic, technological, economic, demographic, and geopolitical upheavals, the question of
the ethics of literature may seem peripheral; at the same time, in an age of diminished prospects,
it becomes more urgent than ever to raise questions of what values remain or can be salvaged.
Capitalizing on Theodor W. Adorno’s contention that art’s ‘powerlessness and superfluity in
the empirical world’ make it a paradoxically potent site of ethical and political interrogation,
this conference will focus on the juncture of literature and ethics in the present—in light of
contested pasts and uncertain futures.
