Synopsis
Chi Mo Sai (Yuen Wah) meets Wong (Roger Kwok) in Auntie Fei's (Yuen Qiu) cafe and learns that Wong has photographic memory. He decides to exploit this skill by teaching Wong how to play Mahjong, but Fei, Wong's boss, strongly objects to it. Despite Fei's objections, Wong learns Mahjong from compulsive gambler Chi Mo Sai. He impresses triad boss Tin Kau Ko (Wong Jing). Wong falls in love with Tin's mistress (Theresa Fu) and is beaten by Tin's men. Wong then becomes crazy. Luckily, Fei cured him using Mahjong. Fei wanted Wong to beat Tin in the "King of Mahjong" competition and be the King of Mahjong. The film ends with a climactic "King of Mahjong" Competition. It is the only film made in 2005 to boast of having a sequel made in 2005.

When you look back on Wong Jing’s filmography, it’s amazing how often he tried to recreate the God of Gamblers cash cow, just couldn’t let it go I guess.
This isn’t very good and incredibly cheap, feels like a movie that was planned and put together very quickly. There’s definitely some dumb fun to be had though if you like HK silliness, has some creative action bits thrown in for good measure.
It was nice to see Yuen Wah in a goofball protagonist role, he’s definitely the best part of the movie.

There is such a sense that this has all been done before but this time they cynically added mahjong as the ingredient. Heck, this is how movies have always been made but I’ve seen too many for this to be little more than an empty exercise. I was mostly interested when Overbite Jane was on screen; who was played with unnerving charm for such an outdated beauty trope by DJ Miss Yellow/Tung Tung. May she get a sequel with all the boyfriends and plot twists she could desire.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Review by Niels Matthijs (Onderhond) ★★½
Jing Wong was so desperate to launch a new gambling-themed comedy franchise that he made two Kung Fu Mahjong in the same year. As is often the case with these back to back projects the quality between the different instalments is pretty consistent, meaning this first film is rather amusing, but hardly world-class cinema.
Chi Mo-Sai is a professional gambler who is more used to losing than winning. His luck changes when he meets a seasoned croupier. He convinces the man to follow him around and with him by his side he suddenly wins every gamble he makes. But with fortune comes hardship and it doesn't take long before Mo-Sai's life becomes a lot more complicated.
I've seen quite a…

Completely and horribly inconsistent, the comedy is completely shitty and not funny at all, but the drama fares much better, unfortunately there's not much of it.
