History of the Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw

The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw was an American utility helicopter product of the Cold War (1947-1991), shortly after World War II (1939-1945). About 1,728 examples of this type have been made in operators around the world. The series first flew on November 10, 1949, and entered service with the United States Air Force (USAF) on April 16, 1950.

The last American aircraft operated by the United States Navy (USN) flew on November 26, 1950. Retired in February 1969 after decades of faithful service.

The H-19 series originated from a private venture capital program of Sikorsky Corporation. Its original purpose was to test the internal development of the focus, which allowed development to proceed at a faster pace without state involvement. The U.S. military, especially the U.S. Air Force, became interested in bidding and commissioned the YH-19 to begin formal testing and evaluation.

This pattern of development broke out in November 1949.

Like other American aircraft, the H-19 helicopter family was completely renamed after a 1962 reform. H-19A became UH-19A, H-19B became UH-19B, and so on. S-55 is its commercial market designation and includes A, B, C, T and QT models.

Commercial conversions can also be made to create a completely different set of names for the home.

In service with the British Army (produced by Westland), this helicopter is known as the Tornado and is used in various British service by several brands - WS-55, HAR, HAS, HCC, etc., each with It covers SAR, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), general transportation, VIP transportation and other roles. These helicopters have found their operators in Austria, Brazil, Brunei, France, Ghana, Iran, Italy, Kuwait, Nigeria, Qatar and Yugoslavia.

The H-19 was widely used as an unarmed force and cargo carrier in the Korean War, and its balance, reliability and combat capability have been proven. The U.S. Marine Corps was very active with this type throughout the conflict. The U.S.

Air Force operates its fleet in a search and rescue role and a medical evacuation platform. The series also saw some limited service during the early U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War (1955-1975) until it was superseded by the aforementioned H-34 series.

During the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962), the French army used the H-19 as a transport aircraft and gunship, the type was known for its ability to hover, hover and reach remote areas. The series was also used temporarily by France in Indochina - but mainly for medical evacuations.

Overseas production of the H-19 originated from Westland in the UK, SNCASE in France and Mitsubishi in Japan.
