U.S. Gymnastics Championships results, highlights: Simone Biles sweeps events on women's Day 1 | Sporting News (2024)

Simone Biles left it all on the floor on Day 1 of the 2024 U.S. Gymnastics Championships.

The 27-year-old scored a 60.450 in the all-around, becoming the first woman to break the 60-point threshold in this Olympic cycle — and she swept all four events.

That's as good a start as Biles could have hoped for as she goes for her third Olympic appearance. She'll enter Sunday's Day 2 with a 3.4-point lead.

Skye Blakely made her case for the Olympic team, finishing second in the all-around, vault and beam. The 19-year-old looked calm and steady, making it nearly impossible to not consider her as a contender for the Paris Games.

Speaking of Olympians, Suni Lee put up the fourth-best all-around score in her return to elite gymnastics. The reigning gold medalist sat out an entire year from the sport due to kidney issues.

While some stars excelled, others were sidelined with untimely injuries. Shilese Jones pulled out of the competition before it began due to a lingering shoulder injury, while Kaliya Lincoln scratched after two events due to an ankle injury. Both will petition for spots at the U.S. Olympic trials and will likely be approved.

But Trinity Thomas' Paris Olympic dreams appear to be over. The former Florida star injured her ankle during her floor routine, forcing her to scratch the remainder of the meet. She will not be eligible to petition for a place at the Olympic trials.

For everyone else, there's still another full day of competition to show their skills to the national team committee. Sunday's Day 2 is the final chance for gymnasts to show they're worthy of the Olympic trials.

The pressure builds.
