However there is a very visible academic stress that is put on each student, not by the school but between the students and the schools past rep. We are held to a standard to uphold the reputation and do well, we are provided with support from admin and other facilities. But some teachers can be difficult to communicate with. I personally love the school, there are so many classes to choose from, and the 4 by 4 schedule means you can take free periods, and try different electives! You can also get ahead with this system, and graduate early if you wanted. Overall, it isn't very diverse, and lots of the kids are unkind, but that is because it is a very rich school, so most people are spoiled. The teachers have been magnificent. From the first time we met them during back-to-school-night, we felt how engaging their courses would be. The learning is phenomenal. Kudos to Mr. Woo, Ms. Conley, Mr. Crumley, Mr. Pegan, Ms. Nelson, and Mr. Foyle. The conservatory courses have elevated our kid's artistic skills and we're in awe of the drawings and creations. Kudos to the visual arts conservatory. The administration team is responsive, open to changing things if needed. The counselors are so supportive! Ms. Shiroma excels at her job as counselor and is clearly dedicated to the success of all students. For a student to do well and enjoy his/her experience at The Science Academy STEM Magnet, they do have to *want* to be there and take school seriously though. I really love Lowell’s clubs, activities and events. They are super fun and give the school a more lively atmosphere. I especially enjoyed the rallies and festivals. I also think the people here are very friendly and welcoming. I was able to make many new friends and adapt in easily. Another thing that makes me want to stay at this school is the education is extremely helpful for college readiness because it provides all students a sense of challenges and really pushes us to do our best. Some things i think could improve is the teachers’ teaching skills. Even though I know most teachers at Lowell provide students effective support and guidance, some others weren’t giving students the help they needed and aren’t as friendly. 16. #16 Best Public High Schools in CaliforniaPalos Verdes Peninsula High SchoolPalos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, CA·9-12·Rating 4.03 out of 5 680 reviewsSenior: Overall, Pen was a great high school; the school's academics are much higher than other high schools in the area and it is an exciting place to be going to. The teachers, however, do sometimes make it hard to love the school, considering many simply give out worksheets and barely teach the topics and simply read off of the textbook. Resources at Pen for possible college majors and focuses are limited to only more medical and computer based careers. Classes such as Physio Anatomy or Graphic Design only help a small portion of students interested in those fields. Students interested in Business or fashion (etc) must use their limited outside resources instead of simply taking a class that talks about what they want to go into. That is one thing I would like to see change: having more classes or courses that stretch to different careers and passions students might want to go into.My best experiences have been with friends at football games or in sports like lacrosse or soccer.... 19. #19 Best Public High Schools in CaliforniaMt. Everest AcademySan Diego Unified School District, CA·K-12·Rating 4.3 out of 5 50 reviewsParent: This is our first year at Mt Everest after a relocation from the East Coast. My elementary-aged girls are absolutely thriving at MEA. Both went formerly to a small private school, and while they were fine, they weren’t entirely happy. Now they race to the car to go to school. It’s a hybrid program in the elementary and middle school, where kids go to school one morning a week, plus optional afternoons for clubs and enrichment. Teachers give you the curriculum and you work at home with your child independently. Middle school is more traditional in that you can drop your kids off in the morning three days a week, and then high school functions like a college campus. I’m a former teacher who has seen a lot of different schools, public, private, and charter. This school has impressed me greatly. The staff is incredibly kind, respectful, and encouraging with students. They don’t have the largest budget or most advanced facilities, but they manage to do amazing things. A gem!...
