Socceroos Abroad: Irvine assists as St Pauli claim title, Ryan secures Europa League football with AZ (2024)

As the European action wraps up for our Socceroos Abroad, Jackson Irvine assisted again as he ensured St Pauli returned to the German top flight as 2. Bundesliga champions.

Starting in Germany, where Jackson Irvine (cap #568) played a full game and assisted alongside Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) as they capped off last week's promotion by winning the 2 Bundesliga title with a 2-1 win against Wehen Wiesbaden on Sunday.

John Iredale (cap #640) came off the bench in the 57th minute for Wiesbaden.

St Pauli had to come from behind to overtake Kiel in the table and clinch the title.


In the Eredivisie, Mathew Ryan (cap #555) was in goal for AZ Alkmaar as they also ended their season with a 3-3 draw against Utrecht on Sunday.

AZ finished the season in fourth and secured a spot in next season's Europa League.

Elsewhere in the Netherlands, Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) played 86 minutes for Heracles Almelo in a 0-0 draw with Fortuna Sittard on Sunday.

The point ensured Heracles were not dragged into the relegation play-offs.

In England, Gethin Jones (cap #639) played a full game for Bolton Wanderers on Sunday as their Championship dreams were shattered after a desperate display at Wembley saw them lose 2-0 to Oxford United in the EFL League One play-off final.

Elsewhere in England, Joe Gauci (cap #631) was on the bench for Aston Villa in the Premier League on Monday as they lost 5-0 to Crystal Palace to end the season.

In Scotland, where Martin Boyle (cap #599) played a full game alongside Olyroo Nectarios Triantis as Hibernian drew 1-1 with Livingston on Monday to end the season.

Elsewhere, Kye Rowles (cap #622) played a full game, and Cameron Devlin (cap #625) played 74 minutes as Hearts drew 3-3 with Rangers to end the season on Saturday. Devlin was also voted Hearts man of the match.

With nothing on the line, the sides played out an entertaining match which could easily have had even more goals as Hearts finished the campaign in third.

Keanu Baccus (cap #628) also played a full game while Ryan Strain (cap #624) came off the bench in the 66th minute as St Mirren lost 3-2 to Celtic on Saturday to end the season.

Saints can look back on 2023/24 with immense pride after securing a second successive top-six finish, as well as Conference League European football for the first time since 1987.

St Johnstone’s Ryan McGowan (cap #546) played 90 minutes on Monday in a 2-1 win over Motherwell.

Dylan McGowan (cap #590) played a full game for Hamilton Academical on Sunday as they sealed a return to the Scottish Championship by beating Inverness Caledonian Thistle 5-3 on aggregate and sending the Highlanders to League 1.

In France's Ligue 1, Denis Genreau (cap #610) came off the bench and played 33 minutes in his return for Toulouse, who suffered a 3-0 loss to Brest on Sunday.

Over to Belgium, where Jordan Bos (cap #632) played another full game for Westerlo as they lost 2-0 to Mechelen on Sunday.

James Holland (cap #508) came off the bench in the 57th minute for Austria Wien as they beat FC Blau-Weiß Linz 2-1 on Sunday to snap a four-game winless streak.

Alex Gersbach (cap #587) came off the bench in the 60th minute for Kalmar FF as they beat IFK Värnamo 2-0 on Monday.

Over to Asia, where Mitch Duke (cap #559) came off the bench in the 76th minute for Machida Zelvia in a 5-0 win over Tokyo Verdy on Sunday in the J1 League.

Elsewhere, Mitch Langerak (cap #566) was in goal and kept a clean sheet as Nagoya Grampus beat Sagan Tosu 2-0 on Saturday.

Thomas Deng (cap #598) also featured in J1 League action on Sunday and played 90 minutes for Albirex Niigata in a 2-1 loss to Shonan Bellmare.

In Korea, Harrison Delbridge (cap #623) played another full game for Incheon United in the K League 1 on Saturday as they beat Daejeon Hana 1-0.

Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played another 90 minutes for Buriram United in a 2-0 win over Uthai Thani on Saturday in the Thai League.

The result meant Buriram claimed their ninth league title after second-placed Bangkok United lost 3-0 to relegation strugglers Police Tero in a Thai League 1 action on Friday night.

In Major League Soccer, Brad Smith (cap #575) was an unused substitute for Houston Dynamo on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas.

In the Netherlands, Adrian Segecic was an unused substitute as FC Dordrecht lost 1-0 (3-2 on aggregate) to FC Emmen in the Eerste Divisie play-offs on Sunday.

In the MLS, Giuseppe Bovalina was an unused substitute for Vancouver Whitecaps FC in a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders on Sunday.

In the K-League 1 League, Alexandar Popovic came off the bench in the 34th minute for Gwangju FC on Sunday as they lost 3-0 to Jeonbuk.

In Poland, Louis D'Arrigo was an unused substitute for Lechia Gdansk on Monday as they beat second-placed Arka Gdynia 2-1 to claim the title with one game remaining.
